THOMAS CHARTRÉ
Cellist

Cellist Thomas Chartré is passionate about his art. A brilliant performer, he has performed with numerous ensembles, as a soloist and chamber musician, in North America, Europe and Asia.

 

In Canada, he has been invited as a soloist on several occasions by the Orchestre de la Francophonie and has played in festivals such as the Elora Festival and the Concerts aux Iles du Bic festival.

 

Principal cello of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra during the 2017-2018 season, he had the chance to perform Beethoven's ninth symphony with a choir of 10,000 singers during the Suntory 10,000 Freude, one of the biggest events in classical music in the world. In spring 2019, he performed the Dvorak concerto under the baton of Joseph Alessi with the New York Sinfonietta at Carnegie Hall.

 

His talent has been recognized on numerous occasions. Among the distinctions he has received are first prize at the Canadian Music Competition, the loan of the “Gand Père” cello from the instrument bank of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Sylva Gelber Prize.

 

In 2016, the CBC included him in its list 30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30. Thomas Chartré has a rich musical background. A doctoral student at the University of Montreal, he holds two master's degrees from the New England Conservatory and the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris. Thomas Chartré had the privilege of studying with renowned cellists, such as Michel Strauss, Roland Pidoux, Paul Katz and Yegor Dyachkov. Thomas Chartré plays on a Joannes Baptista Ceruti 1815 cello and a Marcel Fétique bow generously lent by Canimex.
